News | Reserve Round Up

The Saints eased into second spot, in the league with a comprehensive 6-0 victory over Wellingborough Whitworths. This was a potential banana skin with Whitworths first team not playing there was always a possibility our hosts would be tempted to strengthen their line up by introducing senior players.

As it was Whitworths couldn’t come to terms with our formation and with our lads coping well with the heavy pitch they gave a good solid performance racing to a 3-0 advantage at half time. Our scorers were Shane Fox (2) and Rob Duckett. Ironically Rob was playing out of position, in his brothers James normal slot. James wasn’t playing due to a suspension for being sent off in the derby victory over Eynesbury.

The second half was more of the same with Lee Bassett adding a further 2 goals and Shane Fox completing his hat trick. Manager Paul Dodson made his substitutions early introducing Ricky Taylor for his debut. Dodson summarised the win as “another good all round team performance” he gave a special mention to Tim Trebes who kept another clean sheet.

Blackstones beat Bourne, who had started the morning in second place, 3-0 at Abbey Lawn. Apart from maintaining their push for the title the result pushed Bourne into 4th spot and with them suffering 2 defeats in a week their title aspirations are probably over.

Although Cogenhoe have now moved into third spot after beating Raunds 4-2 they have in reality also lost ground as a consequence of the 2-2 draw against Desborough on Wednesday evening. Deeping hung onto 5th place but also dropped 3 points in a 3-1 midweek defeat at S & L. They bounced back on Saturday by beating Desborough. Northampton Sileby exchanged places with Stotfold. Sileby recorded a 3-1 result to dent Bourne’s hopes in midweek but then lost ground themselves after drawing the Northampton derby with Spencer 1-1. Stotfold also got a good away result at Northern Star, in midweek, only to slip 2-0 at Huntingdon on Saturday. Woodford only picked up 3 from a possible 6 points this week and are another side struggling to find consistency. All of this augers well for the Saints, who continue to make steady progress.

This week Deeping play Huntingdon and Cogenhoe meet Whitworths so we could find ourselves back in 3rd place before we travel to Deeping next Saturday. Next weekend’s match of the day see’s Cogenhoe travel to Blackstones although Blackstones are probably favourites Cogenhoe are the league’s third highest Goalscorers after ourselves and Stotfold.

Tomorrow we host CSV United from Catworth in the semi final of the Huntingdonshire Benevolent Cup, which we are looking to retain for a second consecutive season. CSV play in the Northants Combination League Division 4. They are currently 8th in their league and have lost their last five matches conceding 22 goals into the bargain. Last Saturday they travelled to Corby Kingswood and lost 8-1. We expect to be at full strength. V United from Catworth in the semi final of the Huntingdon gling to find consistency. ground as a consequence
