News | UCL Premier Review

At long last we have had a full league programme with every club in the league playing at least once in the last week, so there is a lot to review for a change.

It’s been a good week for the Saints as we end the week on a high following our 4-2 home victory over Bourne. Our forwards continue to find the back of the net as Liam Harrold (2), Dan Jacobs and Robert Hughes did the business to gain us the 3 points, which have helped us retain top spot in the table and increase our lead over Daventry Town to 4 points.

The “King” scored his 9th goal in 4 games whilst “Goal a game” chipped in with his customary strike to take his tally to 11 goals in 10 outings. The victory was our 6th on the bounce in a run of 15 games undefeated which stretches back over 4 months.

Elsewhere second placed Daventry dropped 2 points in a goalless draw at Roker Park Stotfold. This was only the third time that Daventry have failed to score in the league this season, the other occasions their 0-0 draw with Desborough back in the opening week of the season and of course their 2-0 defeat by us in October. It’s not been their best week for some time as they lost at Pagnell in the League Cup semi final on Tuesday, by 4-3 after extra time. That looked to be a cracker of a match with Pagnell twice coming from behind to book their place in the final. Daventry had midfielder Josh Blake sent off for retaliation and a further 5 players booked. This week they travel to the Rockingham Triangle, to play Corby Town in the final of the Hillier Cup one of 16 fixtures they have to complete before they visit Rowley Park on 1st May. They return to league action on Saturday when they host Boston Town.

Deeping kept their own momentum going beating Blackstones 3-2 at Lincoln Road to extend their run to nine unbeaten. They fell behind conceding after just 8 minutes, but their own talisman Ashley Stevens scored a brace to put them in control. Mitch Griffiths consolidated the points in the 65th minute before John Stead scored an 89th minute consolation for the hosts.

Long Buckby have held onto 4th spot with an unconvincing 3-3 draw at home to Wellingborough. It could have been a lot worse for the Bucks as the Doughboys lead 3-1 after 70 minutes. Dan Holman scored his 13th league goal of the season to put them back in the game before Greg Ling got his second of the match to salvage the draw. In the week they beat Northampton Spencer 1-0 courtesy of a Dan Holman header. By all accounts this was a scrappy affair but the win put the Bucks into 4th spot and at the same time completes a double over the Millers.

Boston didn’t play on Saturday however they were in league action on Tuesday evening in the Lincolnshire derby with Bourne Town the visitors to Tattershall Road. Gary Bull's penalty on the quarter hour had the Poachers in front at the break. Tony Pascu, who scored against us on Saturday, levelled twelve minutes into the second half, but Boston were back in front after 70 minutes, Laszlo Lovas the marksman. A second Bourne equaliser from Sam Kirton after 79 minutes saw the spoils shared.

Pagnell recorded their third league draw on the run but left it late to equalise from a disputed 89th minute penalty by Vinny Shrieves at Waterworks Field. Desborough had lead from the 8th minute when new signing Keall got the opener. The draw was still good enough for Ar Tarn to open up a small gap over bottom placed Raunds.  Earlier in the week Desborough won 1-0 at Corinthians.

Cogenhoe gained a cracking result at Sleaford winning 3-1; Ben Baines set them on course for victory with 2 goals inside the opening 14 minutes. Bolland hauled Sleaford back into the fixture but Alfie Taylor clinched the victory scoring 4 minutes before the end. Cogenhoe didn’t play in the week however Sleaford thumped Wellingborough 4-1 at Eslaford Park. Wellingborough dominated the first half but failed to turn their chances into goals. Sleaford took the lead, against the run of play just before half time when Simon Bolland netted. Hunter, Wormall and then Lunn scored to put the game out of reach with Wellingborough’s 75th minute consolation coming from the penalty spot.

St Ives and Daventry United didn’t have league fixtures but Holbeach beat strugglers Raunds 3-1 at Kiln Park. Rothwell versus S & L and Yaxley against Spencer ended in 1-1draws.
