Not the correct word to describe the performance but it's definitely appropriate to describe the result. We looked lacklustre from the off and seemed to play a long ball far too often. The midfield didn't play with their normal verve but we still got the goals and took the points.
Thursday night saw us having to change the side with the "Maestro" unavailable due to family commitments in Ireland, this was exacerbated by a recurrence of Jonahs hip injury, and Jordan Gents England call up which will deprive us of his services for the next fortnight. Dan French sustained a knock, late on in training, so as a consequence we patched a team together. We welcomed back Robert Hughes and Lewis Webb to the midfield and they put in workmanlike performances.
Bourne have a young and exciting side and nothing should be taken away from our opponents who in recent weeks have been unlucky to lose at Daventry Town and then gain a very credible draw at Boston. They were bolstered by the return of Ian Dunn, who is a decent bloke and good player, from St Albans.
We got off to a decent start with Peggy running at the visiting defence; he seemed to have the beating of the full back and caught him in possession on several occasions. He unleashed a thunderbolt, which cannoned off the cross bar to allow the "King" to chest the ball home for our opener. This should have signalled that normal service was resumed but somehow we allowed Bourne back into the game. A second goal from the "King" from a Dan Jacobs cross saw us regain control before the first half break.
After the restart another defensive error saw us return the initiative to our visitors. This time we dug in and pushed forward for a winner. With the "Rabble" chanting "attack, attack, attack" we laid siege to the Bourne goal and our efforts were rewarded as Rob Hughes shot direct from a corner and beat the defence with comparative ease. This rocked Bourne who were now under the cosh and it was only a matter of time before "goal a game" did his duty claiming his 11th goal in 10 appearances to put the game and three points out of reach of Bourne.
The "King" hobbled off after turning his ankle late on, but he had, more than, done his fair share again having notched 9 goals in his last 4 outings.
Daventry slipped up at Stotfold which means that we will retain the top spot beyond next weekend. So next up its St Ives at Rowley Park as the momentum builds.
