News: Classy Saints win again

The Saints recorded their 10th away victory of the season to take them 5 points clear at the top. The performance which saw Liam Harrold rediscover his goal scoring touch with the perfect hat trick (a header plus one from each boot) must rank amongst their best this season. We also returned another clean sheet, making it 16 for the season.

The foundation for victory was built on an excellent all round team performance which reflected a new found confidence and togetherness amongst the entire squad. Sleaford came into the game having thrashed Yaxley 6-1 earlier in the week, scoring 10 goals in their previous 2 matches but so dominant was the Saints performance that they hardly had a sniff of a goal scoring chance.

Steve Lomas stuck to form and changed the line up that had performed so well at Rothwell earlier in the week. Matt Haniver, who signed from Cambridge City earlier in the week slotted in at right back in place of Chris Hyem. Jordan Gent was rested, having played 3 games in the previous week including his England Colleges debut allowing Adam Jones to move from left back into the middle. Mickey Hyem was drafted in at left back.

Tony Scully, who is on fire at the moment, set the tone, running at the home defence who could quite simply not get near him. The “King” worked his socks off and Dan “Goal a game” Jacobs stretched the home defence all afternoon. The home side who lacked finesse but had plenty of strength and determination, were matched and bettered by the Saints all over the pitch.

Our first goal, which was straight from the training ground, came after just 10 minutes and once the home defence was breached you could just tell that it was going to be our afternoon. We laid siege to the home goal and good pressure set up the second for Dan Jacobs who scored after a defensive error. We turned around a 2-0 then a couple more from Liam wrapped up the points and allowed the manager to make 3 changes to rest Scully, Harrold and Hughes. The team left the pitch to be mobbed by the travelling fans that had made the long trip north.

Unfortunately we have no match now until the 20th when we return, at long last, to Rowley Park. But next weekend the Reserves entertain Eynesbury Rovers in the semi final of the Scott Gatty Cup. Please come along and cheer the boys on, we are hoping to retain the trophy for the 4th consecutive year.
