Match Report: Mildenhall 3, St Neots 0 (F.A. Cup)

The presence of the FA Cup at Rowley Park earlier in the week, failed to inspire St Neots as they disappointingly exited this year's competition away at Mildenhall.

Still missing several players, Saints had the better of the early exchanges with efforts by Glen Fuff and Ian Edge just missing the goal. The game was, however, generally a scrappy affair with a gusting wind and sloping pitch. Saints could not get any fluency into their game and it was the home side that created the bulk of the chances with Danny Partridge and John Sands prominent although their finishing was poor when the opportunities to score came along. Luke McShane was not really tested and Saints, despite shots from Michael Hyem and Lee Bassett, failed to put any real pressure on the home goalkeeper who had looked suspect at times. Bassett limped off towards the end of the first half and St Neots were a little fortunate not to find themselves behind at the interval.

Both sides almost scored at the beginning of the second half with McShane making a good save and Liam Harrold just failing to break through the home defence. Parity did not last long as Ryan Foster finished well after 52 minutes as Saints failed to clear a cross. Luke Knight responded with a header as the visitors immediately tried to get back into the game. They were then denied two possible penalties as Liam Harrold appeared to be fouled in the area and a Mildenhall defender seemed to deliberately handle the ball when it was crossed in. Steve Dogbe then had a header blocked on the goaline and was unable to force home the loose ball before Mildenhall doubled their lead on 70 minutes. A cross from the right was missed at the far post and John Sands shot past McShane. Saints struggled to recover from this blow although they almost pulled a goal back with seven minutes left when Shane Fox hit the post with a header from a Parys Okai cross. This proved to be their last real effort and Mildenhall scored a third just on the final whistle when a long ball caught the Saints defence out and Sands scored his second goal of the game.
